From Denny: Check it out! After spending a 100 years frozen in the ice of Antarctica, a bottle of 1896 Scotch is now ready to be poured out for your enjoyment. The famous bottle is in Christ Church, New Zealand. Awwww, the Kiwis get all the fun...
Actually, no one is going to drink the stuff - unless some enterprising museum curator sneaks a sip or two over the next century. The bottle of whiskey was recovered from an Antarctica expedition of Sir Earnest Shackleton and is being preserved in a museum. They found the bottle back in 2006 and the crates have been thawed very slowly since then. Eleven bottles were found wrapped in paper and straw to protect them from the elements.
Of course, those of us who have put a bottle of liquor in the freezer from time to time - like gin, vodka or Jager Meister - know that alcohol doesn't freeze at those temperatures. Neither did these bottles. When the crates were found they could hear the whiskey sloshing around inside the bottles. I guess researchers took their time thawing out the crates to preserve the crates, not the liquor.
While right now the museum is claiming the bottles will never be poured out for drinking, they are allowing brew meisters a chance to take samples. Why? To see if they can replica the 1896 brew.
Museum folks might want to reconsider the pouring of at least a few bottles. Why? It would be great for fund raising. What a unique experience for the folks who love good spirits! :)
